A recommended requirement, not a formal mandate
It is important to be precise on this point. Process mapping is, by definition, a multidisciplinary effort. It is not a formal requirement of the ISO 45001 standard, even though it is always welcome, as noted by Qualitexpert. The process approach itself is well integrated into the high-level structure common to ISO management system standards, with an OH&S management system model based on continuous improvement and the PDCA cycle.
Processes specific to occupational health and safety
What truly distinguishes an ISO 45001 map is the list of processes it must imperatively cover, beyond the three classic categories of core, management, and support processes.
Continuous hazard identification
According to Qualitexpert, ISO 45001 requires a dedicated process for the continuous and proactive identification of hazards, as well as a process for assessing opportunities to improve health and safety performance under clause 6.1.2.3.
Worker participation and consultation
A worker participation and consultation process must be formalized in accordance with clause 5.4 (a requirement specific to ISO 45001), which has no equivalent as strong in ISO 9001 or ISO 14001. Risk identification methods are based on task observation, process mapping, feedback, and occupational health data, bridging field-level perceptions with documented evidence, according to SST Consulting Firm.
Operational control and change management
Two processes complete the foundation specific to ISO 45001 : the operational control process for hazard elimination and risk reduction (clause 8.1.2), and the change management process for temporary or permanent modifications that impact health and safety performance (clause 8.3).
Building a map focused on OHS risks
The method is still built on the same families of macro-processes as other ISO standards (operational, management, support), but each process must be linked to its exposure to OHS risks rather than its contribution to customer satisfaction or environmental impact. A well-constructed ISO 45001 map generally includes about fifteen essential processes, each of which may contain several sub-processes.
The link with the Single Risk Assessment Document
The OHS process map and the Single Risk Assessment Document feed into each other : identifying processes helps structure risk assessment by activity rather than by isolated workstation, and conversely, the risks already identified in the DUERP guide the prioritization of which processes to map first.
